Cleaning Messy Datasets

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Often the most important meanings in our datasets are not easily available on the “surface” of the data. Perhaps the data have been generated or entered in inconsistent ways. Perhaps the meaning you are looking for has to do with the relationship between records, rather than the content of records themselves. Perhaps you need to compare information between datasets that are only roughly comparable, and have no obvious linked key. Techniques will be demonstrated in Excel, but are applicable to any tool or software. In this session we’ll review 1) Recoding with lookup tables 2) Aggregate Positioning techniques allow you to define each record in relation to all like or different records in the entire dataset 3) Matching poorly-related data by constructing new fields to serve as links and comparison points.
